DNA Monday: Haplogroup H3, My Deep Peeps

Is anyone out there in haplogroup H3? Anyone at all? Think I'm the only one! Can't be.

Still here stumbling around under the Nut Tree looking at my DNA results from 23and Me. It strikes me that while other blogs are written by experts and offer answers, here I am wandering round watching the questions multiply before my eyes. Why anyone would want to read this mess is beyond me, but thank you so much for stopping by. And if my misery from time to time makes you feel less miserable, then something has been accomplished.

Before I got my DNA test results back I tried to get up to speed on some aspects of the test, and one of them is haplogroup. I found out that haplogroup is a way to think about the great tree of man, or Homo Sapiens. Because I'm female my haplogroup comes down from a very distant woman living about 190,000 to 200,000 years ago now called Mitochondrial Eve. As the great family of woman grew and migrated, the ladies haplogroups grew and migrated. You can see that it's helpful to change the letters at each junction where the tree branches out.

My group, H, can only be given to female descendants because it's contained in the mitochondria of female DNA known by it's abbreviation, mtDNA. Guy haplogroup determination has a whole other set of letters and because there's so much written about yDNA and surname tests, let's let them fend for themselves. H, L2, and A haplogroups belong to us gals.

Science likes to get as specific as possible so the letters break down into sub groups and numbers are added. The haplogroups are also called clads, and the numbers are called subclads. These can be further broken down and if they are then lower case letters are added. While I'm H3 I've seen other people's results that are E1a. And science isn't resting on its laurels. No, researchers are working and these subclads are, even as I write and you read, now breaking down subclads even further in an effort to be as specific as possible. That's great because each addition of a letter or number means deeper specificity, and don't we want that so we can know as much about our deep peeps as possible?

I've had a good time finding out about my H3 haplogroup. We're quite an interesting band of travelers and here's our story. Haplogroup H originated in Southwest Asia about 20,000 to 25,000 years ago on that great big tree of man, er I mean, of women, when H came out of haplogroup HV. You can Google up a haplogroup migration tree if you get a spare moment and are interested.

My H3 deep peeps, after a stint in Southwest Asia, moved on down the line as part of the migration during the last ice age, and landed in the Franco-Catabrian Glacial Refuge. Interestingly for me, this is where all of the cave art also comes from. So can you picture them huddling in caves and what not, enduring the last ice age? If I was there I'd have said, "Hey, let's put some art on those cave walls!" This group was also responsible for repopulating much of Europe after the ice melted.

Well, I could go on here because this is the kind of stuff I just love knowing. But you'll have your own haplogroup to work on and the fun of finding out about your own deep peeps!

Perhaps not all Native Americans are in mitochondrial groups A, B, C, D, & X? Or, somewhere in her line some generations before her there must have been a female from an H3 region like Portugal, France, Basque, etc.?

  23. H3, O+. Always considered my maternal lines to be predominantly British Isles, English, Scottish, perhaps Irish. But the two furthest-back females at the bottom of my tree are both born ca. 1770 Virginia. Have somewhat similar last names. Vittitoe/Videto (from records) and Rippeto. It's been suggested that that Rippeto may have been Rubideaux -- perhaps French Huguenot. Always an adventure!

  29. I am male, H3 and O negative. German immigrant to the USA, with no known priors, although my siblings immigrated as well and have children in the USA. Ladies from Indian backgrounds, I do believe you are an important link in the heritage chain of the families of Conquistadors, and possibly Sephardic Jewish women from the Spanish/Porugese dispora. A comparison of H3 values between a descended from early Newport, RI settlers and American Indian descendants with H3 values would be highly interesting, and shed some light on the very early settlers (other then soldiers and officers) of the Americas and inversely on the trek of Sephardic Jews in Europe, of which very little is known.

I have no British or Irish dna surprisingly compared to all the other H3's! But my sister, brother and maternal relatives have a lot of red or blonde hair! 68. Thank you for this informative blog post & interesting comments! Very nice to meet everyone in the H3 family! My maternal haplogroup is H3 also (as per 23andme) and my blood type is O-. My mbti is INFJ. I'll be 45 in March and was diagnosed in my mid to late 20's with a very severe form of Fibromyalgia & and the autoimmune disorder, Ankylosing Spondylitis. I'm hoping more genetic discoveries are made in the near future to ascertain how some of us are immune to certain illnesses while being predisposed to others. I read online that haplogroup H and H3 have a greater degree of genetic immunity to diseases such as hiv while simultaneously being predisposed to inheriting & developing Alzheimer's -- My Mother was diagnosed with this horrible disease in 2014. Supposedly, H3 handles the affects of premature aging a bit better than other haplogroups! Not sure if and how all of these things are interconnected but it's utterly fascinating information to say the least! I Currently reside on the MS Gulf Coast/one hour East of New Orleans. I am 100% European -- Heavily Scots-Irish/British & Scandinavian on my Father's side and heavily German/Scots-Irish & Basque on my Mother's side. My Father (surname Isaacs) was from West Virginia and my Mother (surname Sigler) is from Louisiana. Both of my paternal & maternal lineages have been in the U.S. for many hundreds of years -- very old stock American settlers. I'm interested in finding out as much as I possibly can about our H3 haplogroup. Until then, sending wishes to all for a lovely 2019! Kind Regards, Lea xoxo

  69. My theory is that 25000 years ago H3 was a nomadic subgroup out of Africa through Israel with a high intermarriage rate (4%) with Neanderthals. Their descendants often have prodigious memories. The H3 migrated northward through the Black Sea and then eastward Iinto Asia. During the ice ages they adapted to a hunting environment atop the ice traveling west through the Baltics, russia, Poland,Finland, scandanavia and ultimately ireland where one nomadic group the “corca mogha”(tribe of Mog) settled around 7000 bc as the glaciers receded. The Corca Mogha remained the principal aboriginal tribe of Ireland for several millennia. Approximately 5000 years ago they were displaced to the region between kilkerrin and gort in eastern Galway. The celts taxed them at rate ten times greater than other tribes. Eventually the corca mogha were referred to as “descendants of slaves”. Perhaps because of their genetic memories, Their descendants had an astonishingly high rate of academic success. The corca mogha dominated the brehon lawyers, administered the law schools and were often elected to run the abbeys. The royal line was restabliahed and the king of corcamoe was one the twelve great kings advising the high king of Connaught and served as military chiefs for the high king of Ireland. After the defeat of Connor, their castle in gort was destroyed and many of the corca mogha scattered around the world. Some remained in Ireland in the area around kilerrin. The Corca mocha continued to speak their unique language until it finally became extinct in the 1800’s. Please email me at johnloftus@live.com if you have any leads. Thanks!
